About
Art In Residence
Art In Residence is a non-profit 501-c3 organization, founded by Nathaniel Ancheta, David Edward Martin and Janice Ngan. Our mission at Art In Residence is to explore the potential of public art in Antelope Valley, CA through active practice, outreach, and education.
- We believe that art should be a living, breathing element of our community, deeply integrated into its fabric.
- We challenge the notion that "nothing is out here" by highlighting the region’s potential and beauty through creative expression.
History:
Art In Residence started as a search for home. It began with a single plot of open land in Antelope Acres, CA, purchased by Nathaniel Ancheta in early 2018. By 2019, Nathaniel partnered with fellow artists David Edward Martin and Janice Ngan, and together they incorporated as a non-profit organization.
Originally focused on exploring public art through the form of sculpture in the open desert region of Antelope Valley, CA, Art In Residence has since evolved into a pivotal community organization. The initial vision was to use this open plot of land for art exhibitions, creating a space where artists could showcase exhibitions and engage with the community. Today, while the plot of land remains a central exhibition space, Art In Residence has expanded its programs to include a wider range of public initiatives.
Program Areas:
- Workshops
The A.I.R. workshops, launched in 2022, are designed to foster educational growth through Thematic Exploration, Artist Showcase, Community Engagement, and Cultural Enrichment. These sessions offer an immersive experience in learning and creativity, featuring skill-based workshops, insightful artist talks, and thematic programming that addresses a wide array of topics. Participants engage with contemporary issues, interact with talented artists, and immerse in diverse cultural narratives. The workshops serve as a vibrant platform for community interaction, artistic inspiration, and cultural understanding, aligning with the mission to provide a comprehensive educational experience that transcends traditional learning environments.
- Exhibitions
Started in 2019, the A.I.R. Annual Exhibition is a highly anticipated event that showcases the unique essence and diverse narratives of the region through the medium of visual arts. Each year, the exhibition adopts a distinct theme that delves deep into the facets of Antelope Valley’s landscape, culture, history, or future prospects. Carefully curated to present a multifaceted exploration, the exhibition may feature the works of multiple artists or be dedicated to the vision of a single artist, providing a broad spectrum of perspectives and artistic interpretations. Spanning an extended duration of six months, the exhibition offers ample opportunity for residents and visitors alike to engage with the art, participate in associated events, and immerse themselves in the rich thematic exploration of the region.
- Events
A.I.R. Events is committed to elevating the concept of community gatherings by transforming them into unparalleled, immersive experiences. Our signature annual outdoor movie night is just the beginning. We envision a series of events that not only entertain but also harmonize with the breathtaking landscapes of the Antelope Valley. Our objective is to create a platform where attendees can forge meaningful connections, both with the natural world and amongst themselves, in settings that leave a lasting impression.
By integrating various forms of entertainment with the intrinsic beauty of the Antelope Valley, we aim to cultivate a profound respect and love for our local environment. We believe that when people come together in such dynamic and beautiful settings, it not only enhances their experience but also strengthens community ties. Our events are designed to be more than just gatherings; they are opportunities for collective celebration, learning, and engagement with the arts and nature.
Ultimately, A.I.R. Events aspires to be a catalyst for community cohesion and environmental stewardship. Through thoughtfully curated experiences that highlight the unique charm of the Antelope Valley, we seek to inspire a collective sense of responsibility towards preserving its beauty for future generations, while also nurturing a strong, interconnected community.
- Special Projects
Our "Special Projects" includes a range of initiatives and engagements that exist on the periphery of traditional art programs. These projects often involve partnerships with schools, educational municipalities, and other organizations to bring art into diverse spaces and integrate it into daily life.
As part of our mission to make art a continuous part of everyday life, we foster local engagement, cultural enrichment, and accessibility through these special projects. We believe that art should be a living, breathing element of our community, deeply integrated into its fabric.
